The game will automatically set the goal for you. However, this does not mean that you need to stick to it. Sometimes there may be a better position. Make sure you always check the route to see if the target location is the best. Feel free to move it around at will. Being able to determine the best target takes some experience. Experiment a bit until you have a better understanding of each course.
As a general rule, you should always aim for the fairway. If the area you are currently aiming at is too close to the sand and you are not sure if you can hit the ball perfectly, then it may be better to aim for a safer spot. This may take you longer, but it is better than getting stuck in the wrong spot. Remember, you are playing against other players. If you want to win, you can't afford to take too many risks.
Once your ball is close enough to the hole, the controls of the game change. You need to nudge to get the ball into the hole. As with regular shots, you will need to pull the ball back to start the stroke. You will notice that the bull's eye has disappeared. Instead, there will be a path of light showing the path your ball will take once released. There is another pin that needs to be aligned with the path. Adjust the path so that it goes into the hole and then wait for the pin to be fully aligned before releasing the ball. Make sure you don't use too much power or the ball will roll over the hole.
The game will tell you when you are hitting the ball too much, so you just need to pay attention. If you use the right amount of power for your putt, you will see the hole marker rise. The hole will also glow blue when you are ready for a perfect shot. Play with power and watch the game carefully to master the putt.
