Among Us, also known as Space Werewolf Kill, is a multiplayer video game developed and released on 15 June 2018 by the American game studio InnerSloth. The game has a space theme, with players taking on the role of one of the Crewmates (Crewmate) or Impostors (Impostor). The Crewmate's goal is to find the Impostor and complete the mission, while the Impostor's goal is to kill all crew members without being detected. Although the game was released in 2018, it received little interest and only became popular in 2020 because of the many Twitch live owners and YouTubers who played it.
Inspired by the tabletop game Hitman, Among Us was initially released as a single map local multiplayer game for mobile devices only. in June 2018, the game was released on Android and iOS with the AppID "spacemafia". Shortly after its release, Among Us reached an average of 30 to 50 players. It didn't release super well" according to programmer Forest Willard, and designer Marcus Bromander believes it was due to InnerSloth Studios "We're really bad at marketing". The development team "[gave] up on it several times", but continued to work on it with the support of a small group of players, adding multiplayer online modes, new missions and customisation options, before releasing the Steam version. the PC version supports Cross-platform play, with two more maps, "Mira HQ" and "Polus", added in 2019. A new map called the Airship, based on the Henry stickmin series, was also added on 2021-03-31.
Among Us is a multiplayer game that supports 4-10 players. Where the game will randomly select 1-3 players to play as the invaders and the rest of the players will play as the crew. The game has four maps: The Skeld (space ship), Mira HQ (skyscraper), Polus (polar region) and The airship (latest map, mobile version may have some problems). The crew has to complete tasks on the map in the form of mini-games, which include maintenance work on vital systems, such as rewiring or refuelling the engines. Intruders are given fake mission lists in order to blend in with the crew. Intruders can identify other intruders and have the ability to sabotage map systems, traverse vents and kill crew members. If the player is killed by the impersonator, they will become a ghost. Ghosts have the ability to pass through walls, but can only continue to interact on the map in a limited way and cannot be seen by any other player except the dead player who has turned into a ghost. All players except the ghost can only see for a limited distance.
Crew members need to complete all missions or find and destroy all invaders to win, while invaders need to kill a certain number of crew members to equal the number of invaders remaining or destroy the countdown to win, and ghosts win by assisting their teammates who are crew members or invaders to complete missions or perform sabotage. When an intruder carries out a sabotage activity, it either has an immediate effect (e.g. turning off all lights) or the sabotaged facility will start a countdown and if the crew does not solve the facility before the countdown ends, all crew members will die and the game will end.
If a player finds a corpse, they can immediately report it and force all players to attend a group meeting to vote for the suspected intruder, using a relative majority system where the player with the highest number of votes will immediately die and become a ghost. Players can also call a meeting at any time by pressing the 'emergency meeting' button on the map. The game is played by text chat or by using Quick chat to type faster (in the new version players under 13 can only use Quick chat to chat.) Only living players can communicate during a session, while ghosts can only communicate between ghosts. Although the game does not have a built-in voice chat system, players usually use a third-party chat tool like Discord to communicate while playing the game. The game offers a variety of customisation options, such as a field of view and an emergency meeting button. There are also many items to choose from, such as spacesuit colours, skins, hats and pets, some of which require payment
